José Mourinho did not mince his words after Benfica were knocked out by Braga (1-3) on Wednesday in the League Cup semifinals. Furious at his players’ performance, the Special One settled scores at the press conference with one of his trademark outbursts.
José Mourinho is putting his players in front of their responsibilities. Things are not going as hoped for the Special One on his return home. After a heavy cup blow, the Portuguese coach brought out the big guns.
“I want the players to sleep as well as I do, that is to say, not at all. That’s what I wish for them. That they don’t sleep and think a lot, like I’m going to,” he said, before driving the point home.
Mourinho demands accountability
Mourinho also lamented the lack of real dialogue in the locker room, explaining that there had only been monologues, which does not interest him. “I prefer to talk with the players,” he insisted.
This defeat tastes especially bitter from a sporting point of view. Benfica let slip a golden chance to win a trophy that was widely considered within reach. In the final, the Lisbon side would have faced Vitória Guimarães, the surprise conqueror of Sporting Portugal (2-1).
A missed opportunity that largely explains Mourinho’s cold anger and the severity of his words after the match.
