French football has lost one of its most respected and beloved figures. Stade Brestois head coach Éric Roy passed away on Wednesday at the age of 58 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. His death has sparked deep emotion throughout the football community.
In a moving message shared on social media, his family paid tribute to his courage: “Throughout this time, he continued to live with a strength that still amazes us, sustained by the love of his family, by football, by his work, and by the passion that never left him.”
A Lasting Legacy at Brest
Roy joined Brest in 2023 and achieved what many considered impossible, transforming the Breton club into one of the great success stories of French football. His tenure will forever be remembered for guiding Stade Brestois to a historic qualification for the UEFA Champions League, an achievement widely praised across the sport.
LFP president Vincent Labrune described him as “one of the most respected, most loved, and most genuine personalities” in French football. He emphasized that Roy’s journey with Brest, culminating in Champions League qualification, would remain etched in the history of the French championship.
Stade Brestois also paid a heartfelt tribute to its coach, calling him an inspiring figure who contributed enormously to the club and helped write the finest chapters of its history. From the United States, where he is preparing for the World Cup with France, Didier Deschamps honored Roy as “a highly competent coach and a deeply likable personality,” praising the determination with which he fought his illness and remembering him above all as “a profoundly human man.”
