“I’m Not an Idiot”: Jürgen Klopp Weighs In on Red Bull Position

Jürgen Klopp, recently appointed head of football at Red Bull, once again showed his unwavering support for Stéphane Gilli. After the eye-catching Cup performance against PSG, the German coach responded to the criticism aimed at his team’s defensive style of play.

Klopp is now settled at Red Bull, and the Paris FC project is taking up a lot of his time. For the former Liverpool coach, there is no question of abandoning the PFC project. He calls for patience and insists that he has no intention of interfering with Gilli’s tactical choices.

Defending a Pragmatic Approach

“It’s great to beat PSG the way we did in the Coupe de France (1–0) with a very defensive tactic. Was it good advertising for football? No, but it was for resilience and team spirit,” the German technician told several media outlets, including Agence France-Presse in Germany.

He also confirmed that his role is not to step into the tactical decisions of Paris FC and its coach. “I’m not going to see Stéphane (Gilli, PFC’s coach) after the match and tell him, ‘Blah blah blah, I told you, 4-3-3…’ No, we talk. He doesn’t have the players, so playing with five at the back is not a problem at all,” Klopp added. “I’m responsible for football at Red Bull. I don’t expect everyone to play the same way.”

“They want us to play the best football possible, but if you are Paris FC, I don’t expect us to have 80% possession—I’m not an idiot,” Klopp said. “The overall development in the future, over the years, has to be about freeing ourselves from the quality of the players, because we will never have the best,” he added.
