PSG won the Intercontinental Cup on Wednesday against Flamengo after a penalty shootout (1-1, 2-1 on penalties), securing a historic sextuple in 2025 following the Trophée des Champions, the Coupe de France, Ligue 1, the Champions League, and the UEFA Super Cup.
Coming on in the 78th minute, Ousmane Dembélé endured a difficult evening, missing chances before sending his penalty well over the bar. Despite this, Nuno Mendes was keen to defend him.
Support for Dembélé Despite a Tough Night
“I don’t think it’s a period, it’s just one match. He wasn’t at his maximum level. I also think he’s coming back from injury, even if that’s not an excuse. If he comes on, it’s because he’s fit to play, but today just wasn’t his day,” the Portuguese defender said.
Sidelined by repeated injuries since his Ballon d’Or, Dembélé is clearly feeling the after-effects of a hectic year but can rely on the support of the dressing room. Having suffered successive hamstring and calf issues before falling ill in recent weeks, the French forward is going through a delicate spell.
PSG will wrap up their 2025 season on Saturday in the Coupe de France away to Vendée Fontenay (National 3) in the round of 32.
