After parting ways with Luciano Spalletti, Italy has made a bold move by naming Gennaro Gattuso as the new national team manager. The announcement came this Sunday, surprising many given Gattuso’s recent struggles at clubs like Marseille, Valencia, and Hajduk Split.
Since their Euro 2021 triumph, the Azzurri have endured a turbulent period—missing out on the 2022 World Cup and crashing out of Euro 2024 in the Round of 16. Spalletti’s final blow came with a humiliating 0–3 loss to Norway in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Why Gattuso ?
FIGC president Gabriele Gravina addressed the skepticism surrounding Gattuso’s appointment: “Gattuso is a symbol of Italian football. The Azzurri shirt is like a second skin to him. His motivation, professionalism, and experience will be key in tackling the challenges ahead,” Gravina said, acknowledging that Claudio Ranieri was initially targeted before declining the role.
A Risky Bet
Gattuso’s recent coaching stints have been underwhelming, but his fierce personality and passion for the game remain unquestioned. Whether that fire can spark a revival in a struggling Italy side remains to be seen.
The real test begins on September 5, when Italy faces Estonia in a must-win World Cup qualifier.
