Shock news in Spain! La Liga has officially cancelled the highly anticipated match between Villarreal and FC Barcelona, which was set to take place in Miami on December 20. The game was meant to be the first-ever official Spanish league match played outside Europe — but the historic project has been scrapped.
In a statement, La Liga announced that the event’s promoter had withdrawn due to “uncertainty surrounding Spain in recent weeks.” The organization expressed “deep disappointment,” calling it a missed opportunity to globalize Spanish football.
“Hosting an official match outside our borders would have marked a decisive step in the international expansion of our competition,” the league said.
Protests win the day
While La Liga insisted the plan fully complied with all federation rules and would not have compromised the integrity of the competition, fan backlash and opposition from several clubs and institutions ultimately killed the project.
Javier Tebas and his team say they will continue working to export Spanish football worldwide, aware that the battle for global influence — against the Premier League and the Champions League — is far from over.
