Waldemar Kita went off after Nantes’ defeat against Lyon (0–3). Furious, he tore into the refereeing without holding back: Mwanga’s sendingoff, a disallowed goal… and the Nantes president erupting: “The referee lacks personality. He’s jumping around like a kangaroo. There’s a real problem.”
This rant caps off a disastrous Matchday 14 for French refereeing. The brutal tackle on Lucas Chevalier in Monaco, not punished with a red card, shocked everyone.
Luis Enrique spoke of “incredible luck” for his goalkeeper. Thiago Scuro, on the Monaco side, has had enough: “I’m tired of talking about the referee. It’s getting boring.”
In Marseille, Medhi Benatia blasted a missed foul against Toulouse. In Strasbourg, questions were raised about a throwin possibly going out of play before Brest’s winning goal. Everywhere, the same criticisms: incomprehensible decisions, lack of consistency, useless VAR.
“They tell us the problem is us, not them”
In this explosive climate, a meeting between the clubs, the LFP and the referees is scheduled for Monday… but Kita no longer believes in it: “Meetings are useless. Nothing will ever change. They tell us the problem is us, not them.”
Ligue 1 is sinking into a fullon power struggle between clubs and referees, and the anger just keeps rising. Heading for an explosion? At this point, we’re really not far off.
