In 2021, nobody could have imagined Lionel Messi, at 38, walking away from FC Barcelona as a free agent. Nobody… not even him. In a heartfelt interview with Sport, the Inter Miami star let the pain of that unexpected goodbye resurface, a wound he has never fully healed from.
Few days ago, Messi visited the Camp Nou without informing the club a surprising scene that shocked everyone. Some thought it looked like a final farewell. But no Leo Messi wants to return to Barcelona. Speaking to Sport, he opened up about his sudden, unplanned 2021 departure to PSG.
“When I left, I felt something strange,” Messi confessed. “The circumstances, the pandemic, those final seasons without fans… After spending my whole life here, I didn’t get the goodbye I had dreamed of. I always imagined finishing my career in Europe, at Barça. And instead, everything ended in a strange, cold way.”
A void. A heavy silence.
“We miss Barcelona so much”
But one thing never changed: the love of the Catalan people. And Messi wants to reconnect with that bond. When he retires, he already sees himself moving back to Barcelona — and the thought alone lights him up.
“I can’t wait to go back. We miss Barcelona so much. My wife, the kids… we talk about it all the time. We have our home there, our memories… our life. I want to see the stadium again once the renovations are finished. I haven’t returned since leaving for Paris. It’ll feel strange discovering a transformed Camp Nou.”
He pauses, before adding: “But it will also be beautiful. Returning to where everything began… letting the memories come back.”
Emotional reunions are on the horizon — the kind that make an entire city hold its breath as a legend finds his way home again.
But it won’t be happening just yet: Messi has extended his contract with Inter Miami.
