Hugo Ekitike, 23, faced a red card on Tuesday against Southampton in the League Cup after he celebrated his decisive goal by taking off his shirt. However, Liverpool has decided that he will not face any internal punishment. And certainly not any salary cut.
Last week, Ekitike was given a talking-to, but that was the extent of Liverpool’s disciplinary action. Coach Arne Slot made it clear in a press conference that mistakes are part of being young. “Players of all ages make errors. Here, we can make mistakes,” he stated.
Although Ekitike will automatically miss the upcoming match against Crystal Palace on Saturday, he received strong support from his coach. Slot praised him as a “fantastic human being” and noted that he is among the most “warm and polite” players in the locker room.
Coach Defends Ekitike Amid Controversy
Liverpool is keen to maintain Ekitike’s momentum, as he has already scored five goals in eight matches across all competitions. This public show of confidence indicates that the former Paris player is carving out a significant role at Anfield, despite some youthful indiscretions.
In short, Liverpool is not about to stifle Ekitike’s development. They recognize his potential and are committed to nurturing his talent as he continues to shine on the pitch.
