Just days before the 2026 World Cup, a new source of tension has emerged between the French national team players and the French Football Federation (FFF). According to L’Équipe, Kylian Mbappé, Rayan Cherki and several other internationals were unhappy to see their images used in a Betclic advertising campaign.

Kylian Mbappé, Rayan Cherki, Ousmane Dembélé, Michael Olise and Désiré Doué all appeared in the advertisement for the sports betting company. However, the players reportedly did not welcome the association.

The issue also relates to image rights, a sensitive topic between the players and the Federation for several years. Mbappé previously pushed for greater consideration of players’ personal convictions regarding certain sponsors. In 2024, he stated that he disagreed with partnerships involving junk food and sports betting promotions, arguing that national team players serve as role models and that such practices can have devastating consequences in some communities.

According to L’Équipe, several players believe the FFF failed to properly consult the team’s senior figures before launching the campaign. Betclic, for its part, maintains that it fully respected the terms of its agreement with the Federation. The controversy arrives at a delicate moment as France attempts to focus on preparing for the upcoming World Cup.
