Big winners over Bayeux (9-0) in the Coupe de France, Olympique de Marseille still provided a small internal storyline around the captain’s armband. Left on the bench at kick-off, Leonardo Balerdi saw Roberto De Zerbi hand the responsibility to Facundo Medina, who started the match.

A decision that did not change the hierarchy, as the Argentine defender reminded everyone after the game. “Leo remains our captain. In this team, there are many leaders, like Hojbjerg, Kondogbia or Aguerd,” Medina explained, eager to clear up any ambiguity.

But the role does not really seem to suit the English forward. In a press conference, the Marseille coach revealed that Greenwood told him after the game that he did not particularly like wearing the captain’s armband, despite his very strong commitment since the start of the season.

For his part, De Zerbi justified his choices by explaining that he gave the armband to Medina “because he has hot blood,” and to Greenwood to reward his exemplary attitude. A flexible management of the captaincy, without calling into question Balerdi’s status as OM’s number one captain.
