Despite Paris Saint-Germain’s 2-0 win at Liverpool FC and their qualification for the UEFA Champions League semi-finals, Emmanuel Petit remains unconvinced.
PSG have reached the Champions League semi-finals, bringing the dream of back-to-back titles closer. Of course, the challenge ahead remains significant, especially with Bayern Munich in sight. There is reason to celebrate… or perhaps not. Speaking as a pundit for RMC, former French international Emmanuel Petit was highly critical of the Parisian performance, particularly in the second half:
A worrying second-half collapse
“I wasn’t impressed. In the first half, PSG matched Liverpool. In the second half, I saw a PSG side that was very close to breaking but held on thanks to Safonov and Marquinhos, who I thought was outstanding. Liverpool came down on them like thunder, and it reminded me of the Aston Villa game last year, minus the goals. I found PSG worrying.”
The pundit particularly highlighted a major lapse from the Parisians: “For 25 minutes in the second half, I didn’t see PSG at all. Dembélé, on the only real counterattack, silenced Anfield. I didn’t see Vitinha, I didn’t see the midfielders, Kvaratskhelia… they all disappeared. For 25 minutes, everyone vanished. They lost every ball, they were doing nothing anymore.”
“I have never seen PSG suffer like that,” concluded Emmanuel Petit. A harsh judgment, considering PSG still managed to recover and, in the end, that resilience may well be the hallmark of great teams.
