A wave of anger has swept through Olympique de Marseille. Following the 2-0 defeat in Lorient, Medhi Benatia publicly called out his players, condemning a performance far below expectations.
Clearly furious, the sporting director broke his silence to highlight a lack of commitment and output unworthy of the club’s ambitions. A strong message at a crucial moment, as OM faces a decisive end to the season.
A Dressing Room Under Fire After Lorient Defeat
“It’s a scandal. You’re playing against a team almost on holiday, a very good team, and you have five finals ahead… We organize training camps, it costs money, but the goal is to work, reconnect, and rebuild chemistry. How many players flipped the table in the dressing room? Zero. You play for Olympique de Marseille, you put in a performance like that and accept it. Don’t try to fool me. You face Lorient at 5 p.m., with nothing to play for, and you don’t win a single duel or show initiative… You have five finals left for a Champions League objective, it should be visible—but it’s not. The same criticisms keep coming back.”
He continued: “What are we talking about? Courage, pride, respect for the jersey, respect for people. And what do we do in the end? On a 40-meter long ball, am I the one going for it? On the second ball, is it me? When you lose possession in transition—even though we’ve worked on it all week—what do you do? You lose the ball and just watch. And yet during the week, we do the work. That’s the truth.”
Benatia did not hold back: “Some will leave because of the World Cup, others already have a club lined up. The worst part is that in two months, people will say: ‘He’s actually good.’ But you didn’t make the effort here—that’s the problem. These kinds of performances, like against Bruges, PSG, or Nantes at home—we’ve had six or seven this season—are inexplicable. I’m not a psychologist. We’ve asked so many questions this year. How can you play your worst match against Nantes and then your best four days later? No one can explain it.”
He concluded with a clear warning: “We do not accept this, that’s for sure. We’re going to spend the next four weeks together, working morning and afternoon. When you deliver performances like that, you need to work on everything—defense, attacking combinations, desire, effort. And also remind everyone what it means to be a football player. The privilege of doing this job at a club like this. Because in football, if you have no heart and give nothing, it’s hard to receive anything in return.”
