Cristiano Ronaldo could pay the price for his sudden departure from the Portugal camp — although mainly from a sporting perspective. According to A Bola, the 41-year-old forward faces a suspension of up to six months after leaving the national team camp. Financially, however, the potential punishment appears almost symbolic compared with CR7’s fortune.
Extremely unhappy with his situation under Jorge Jesus, Cristiano Ronaldo decided to leave the Portugal camp and travel to Madrid aboard his private jet. He made the decision despite attempts by the coach and the Portuguese Football Federation to convince him to stay.
A Maximum Fine of Just €1,000
Under the disciplinary regulations cited by A Bola, a player who has been called up and abandons a training session, match or national-team activity without justification can be suspended for between one and six months. The exact sporting scope of any potential suspension remains to be determined, particularly regarding matches played with Al-Nassr.
A professional player can also be fined approximately €500 to €1,000. For Cristiano Ronaldo, that amount is negligible. His personal fortune is generally estimated at more than €1 billion. Using €1.2 billion simply as a point of reference, the maximum €1,000 fine would represent only around 0.000083% of his wealth. Proportionally, for someone with assets worth €100,000, that would be equivalent to a fine of barely eight cents.
The real threat therefore lies elsewhere. The regulations provide for a suspension of up to six months, as well as an automatic provisional suspension under certain conditions. However, such a sporting sanction could lose much of its significance if Cristiano Ronaldo confirms his international retirement, as is now being suggested. In any case, the potential €1,000 fine is unlikely to be CR7’s main concern.
