PSG: Covered Ring Road, Nearly 70,000 Seats… The New Parc des Princes Could Be Colossal

Will PSG ultimately remain at the Parc des Princes? While Massy and Poissy are still in the running to host a new stadium, the City of Paris has presented new proposals to convince the club not to leave its historic home. The project is spectacular: the Parc could potentially be expanded to 70,000 seats, with the entire area surrounding the stadium completely redeveloped.

The Paris Saint-Germain stadium project is entering a decisive phase. According to Le Parisien, the three options still being considered are remaining at the Parc des Princes, building a new stadium in Massy, or constructing one in Poissy. Further meetings are expected to help PSG move closer to a final decision. However, the Paris option has gained considerable momentum after the City presented the outlines of a much more ambitious project around Porte de Saint-Cloud.

The biggest change concerns capacity. PSG had long been working on an expansion to around 60,000 seats, but the possibility of increasing the Parc to approximately 70,000 spectators is now being studied, according to Le Parisien. It would represent a huge technical challenge given the stadium’s current configuration and the presence of the Paris ring road. The project would go far beyond the stands, however. Part of the périphérique could be covered to create a large landscaped esplanade of around one hectare, while new PSG and sports-related facilities could include a museum, shops, a dojo and padel courts. The goal would be to create a genuine sports complex around the Parc while completely transforming the Porte de Saint-Cloud district.

Perhaps the most important development, however, concerns ownership of the stadium. For years, this issue was at the heart of the breakdown in relations between PSG and the City of Paris. Under Anne Hidalgo, the municipality categorically refused to sell the Parc, while QSI was unwilling to invest several hundred million euros in a stadium the club did not own. Talks have since resumed and a potential sale is back on the table. For PSG, the price and terms of any deal will be crucial, with the club now seeking full control of its stadium rather than simply signing a very long-term lease. This change has made the Parc des Princes a credible option once again alongside Massy and Poissy.

The saga has already dragged on for more than a decade. From the beginning of the QSI era, PSG considered expanding the Parc to around 60,000 seats, but the stadium was ultimately modernised ahead of Euro 2016 without the major increase in capacity desired by the club’s owners. This time, the project could be on an entirely different scale. Discussions are progressing, although nothing has yet been decided, and the conditions of a possible sale are expected to play a major role in PSG’s final choice. Even if an agreement is reached, patience will be required: 2035 is currently being mentioned as a possible target date for the completion of a fully transformed Parc des Princes.
