The football world is in mourning. Diogo Jota, Liverpool striker, tragically passed away on Thursday at the age of 28 in a car accident, alongside his brother André Silva (25).

The news deeply affected Paris Saint-Germain, where several Portuguese players close to Jota currently play: Nuno Mendes, Vitinha, Gonçalo Ramos, João Neves, as well as Luis Campos, PSG’s sporting advisor.

During Friday’s press conference, Luis Enrique couldn’t hide his emotion:
“This is the worst news anyone can receive. Everyone in football is affected. We send all our support to his family. It’s a terrible tragedy. Our thoughts go to our Portuguese players, who are very touched.”

A powerful minute of silence at PSG training

Friday morning at PSG’s training centre, the atmosphere was heavy. Players, staff, and club personnel gathered around the centre circle for a minute of silence. Nuno Mendes was in tears, Vitinha stared into space, Luis Campos lowered his head behind dark glasses—the grief was overwhelming.

A close source revealed: “Vitinha knew André Silva very well. They grew up together at FC Porto. This is a massive shock.”

The PSG players had hoped to attend the funeral scheduled for Saturday in Gondomar, but with the Club World Cup quarter-final against Bayern Munich the same day, travel is not possible. The match will be emotionally charged for PSG’s Portuguese contingent.
