Rayan Cherki is not really won over by modern football. Criticized this season, especially in the Premier League, the Manchester City attacking midfielder stands by his vision of a more spectacular game. Rayan Cherki is old-school. A playmaker, an old-fashioned livewire.
In an interview with France Football, the 22-year-old French international explained that he prefers creativity to the statistical perfection that, in his view, weighs modern football down a little. “How do I see today’s football? I’m not necessarily a fan of every aspect of it. I’d like people to say, ‘robots are great, but magic is better.’ Playing a perfect match, with 99% successful passes, is good, but producing one with five or six flashes of genius will always be better.”
Cherki defends a more creative vision of football
Cherki also regrets how physical the game has become. “Work rate is not a problem, quite the opposite. But it is a little frustrating because today, many coaches are constantly focused on who will run the most, jump the highest. Football is not that for me. But I don’t have all the answers.”
The player also says he feels nostalgic for another era. According to him, the football he prefers is closer to the game played in the 2000s up to the 2014-2016 period, before it shifted toward a more tactical and athletic style.
