The Super League, a rival competition project to the Champions League launched in 2021, has officially been abandoned. After Barcelona pulled out a few days ago, Real Madrid has now followed. Finally, some will say. A preliminary agreement has been reached between UEFA, Real Madrid — the last major supporter — and the relevant authorities to end the legal disputes. Isolated after the gradual withdrawal of the biggest clubs, the project no longer had a solid foundation.
The more profitable reform of the Champions League also reduced its appeal. UEFA emerges strengthened from the standoff, and the case is now considered closed. “After months of discussions conducted in the best interests of European football, UEFA, the EFC (union of European clubs) and Real Madrid CF announce that they have reached an agreement in principle for the good of European club football,” UEFA said in a joint statement with the Spanish giant and the EFC.
Legal Disputes and Final Collapse of the Super League Project
“This agreement in principle will also make it possible to resolve their legal disputes relating to the European Super League, once these principles are implemented,” UEFA added in its statement. Despite a Madrid appeals court ruling that UEFA had abused its dominant position against the Super League, the project is now fading away.
Real Madrid and promoter A22 were still seeking more than €4 billion in damages from UEFA at the end of 2025, but Barcelona’s recent withdrawal sealed the isolation of the last remaining supporters. Launched in 2021 by 12 major clubs, the Super League has now been definitively abandoned under pressure from fans and institutions.
