Manchester City relegated? Premier League clubs deeply divided

Manchester City’s future is causing major tensions in England. With the possibility of the Citizens being expelled from the Premier League now being discussed, English clubs are reportedly deeply divided over what punishment should be imposed. Between sporting integrity and huge financial interests, the case promises to be explosive.

Manchester City in the Championship? It is possible. But their direct rivals are not necessarily in favour. According to Sky Sports, several Premier League executives are currently discussing the consequences of a potential Manchester City expulsion, and some major clubs are far from convinced that such a drastic sanction would be appropriate. Two senior officials from leading clubs are even said to be “astonished” by the idea that the 15 votes required to remove City could be secured.

Expelling Manchester City could cost rival clubs millions

The main concern is financial. Manchester City are now a major commercial force in English football, and their disappearance from the Premier League could have consequences for the entire competition. “If Manchester City were expelled, there would be huge commercial consequences for everyone and, ultimately, it would cost the other clubs an enormous amount of money,” one executive anonymously told Sky Sports. Broadcasters and sponsors could potentially demand compensation or reconsider their financial commitments. However, not every club shares those concerns, with some believing that allowing City to remain could damage the Premier League’s reputation and the integrity of the competition.

An administrative relegation would not necessarily solve the problem either. The prospect of Manchester City dropping into the Championship is also causing concern. “What benefit would the Championship get from Manchester City coming down? Absolutely none. (…) They would go straight back up, so it would effectively take away one promotion place,” one executive argued. City would not automatically be placed in the Championship if expelled from the Premier League, as any potential admission into the EFL would reportedly have to be approved by a vote involving its 72 clubs.

One thing is clear: the prospect of a Premier League without Manchester City is already deeply dividing English football. With some clubs focused on the potential financial consequences and others stressing sporting integrity, reaching a consensus looks particularly difficult.
