Just when many believed Barcelona were still struggling financially and forced to tighten their spending, the Spanish champions stunned European football by securing the signing of Anthony Gordon from Newcastle. The blockbuster deal, reportedly worth €80 million, has already sparked huge excitement in Catalonia and could be only the beginning of a dramatic summer transfer window.
In a move few saw coming, Gordon has signed a five-year contract that will keep him at Barcelona until 2031. Despite interest from several elite European clubs, the 25-year-old winger ultimately chose Camp Nou as his next destination. Club president Joan Laporta once again demonstrated his ability to pull off major transfers, bringing one of the Premier League’s most dynamic attackers to Spain.
Barcelona Make a Major Statement
The England international completed his medical examination in Barcelona on Thursday. Gordon had already made a strong impression on the Catalan club during last season’s Champions League campaign, where his performances against Barcelona caught the attention of the club’s sporting department. Barcelona highlighted his goalscoring record and dribbling ability as key reasons behind the transfer.
To convince Newcastle to sell one of their biggest stars, Barcelona reportedly agreed to a package worth €70 million upfront plus €10 million in performance-related bonuses. The deal represents a significant financial commitment and signals Barcelona’s determination to compete once again with Europe’s biggest clubs.
However, Barcelona’s transfer activity may not stop there. With Robert Lewandowski’s departure leaving a major gap in attack, the club is reportedly considering a move for Julián Álvarez. The Argentine striker is said to be a priority target for Hansi Flick, although any potential operation could exceed €150 million when transfer fees and salary costs are combined.
