Liverpool have denied claims of a secret meeting with Florian Wirtz, but the Bayer Leverkusen star seems increasingly likely to head to the Premier League — rather than join Real Madrid.
The Reds responded firmly after Bayern honorary president Uli Hoeness claimed that Wirtz had already met Liverpool officials to discuss a summer move. According to The Times, Liverpool insist no such meeting has taken place.
Frimpong First, Wirtz Next?
Wirtz, 22, remains one of the most sought-after players in Europe this summer. Liverpool and Bayern Munich are reportedly battling it out for his signature. The transfer fee could reach £108 million (€126m), a figure that has already driven Manchester City out of the race.
Meanwhile, Liverpool are close to wrapping up another deal: Jeremie Frimpong, Wirtz’s teammate at Leverkusen. The Reds are ready to trigger his £25 million (€30m) release clause.
The pressure is now on Real Madrid, who may have to shift priorities if they want to stay competitive in the race for Europe’s brightest talents.
