Shockwaves hit the Spanish transfer market: Nico Williams, long linked with a move to FC Barcelona, has instead signed a new deal with Athletic Bilbao until 2035.
The 22-year-old winger looked set to join the Catalan giants—everything seemed on track. But in a dramatic twist, he opted to stay loyal to his boyhood club, signing a 10-year extension. “I’m where I want to be, with my people. This is home,” Williams said emotionally in a video released by Athletic.
Barça caught off guard… and furious
According to RAC1, Barcelona had no clue about the U-turn. They reportedly learned of Williams’ decision through Athletic’s official announcement, just like everyone else. While contract talks had hit a few snags, there was still confidence on Barça’s end—until everything suddenly collapsed.
Barça to Nico: never again
Even more stunning, RAC1 claims that it was Nico who initially approached Barça. Now, after his unexpected change of heart, the club feels betrayed. “The door is closed forever,” a Barça source allegedly stated.
Buyout clause raised
As part of the extension, Williams’ release clause was hiked from €58M to nearly €90M, a clear statement from Bilbao. They’re holding on to their star—and they’re making sure Europe knows he won’t come cheap.
Looks like the Nico-to-Barça dream is officially dead. For now.
