In an interview with L’Équipe, Stade Brestois sporting director Grégory Lorenzi revealed that the club tried to recruit the Swedish striker during his time at Coventry City in the Championship.
A Deal That Fell Through Over the Transfer Fee
“His agent told me I was the only French sporting director who contacted him. I was ready to offer between €4-5 million, but Coventry demanded €8 million,” Lorenzi admitted.
Ultimately, no deal was reached, and Gyökeres stayed in England’s second division before exploding at Sporting Portugal, where he is now one of the most prolific scorers in Europe. A huge missed opportunity for Brest.
