Since his high-profile arrival in the summer of 2024, Kylian Mbappé has delivered: 43 goals in 56 games, a Pichichi, a Golden Boot, and an undisputed role as the attacking leader. But this stellar season also exposed an uncomfortable truth — Madrid’s heavy reliance on their French superstar.
Mbappé-dependence: the numbers don’t lie
Mbappé was responsible for 31.4% of Real Madrid’s goals in all competitions, a figure that rises to nearly 40% in La Liga. More telling? He opened the scoring in 15 of the 21 games in which he found the net.
Without him, Madrid’s output dipped dramatically: 1.5 goals per game in his absence, compared to 2.12 with him. When he missed matches against Atlético, Rayo, Bilbao and Getafe, the team only picked up 8 points from 12.
Alonso’s solution: share the load
Now at the helm, Xabi Alonso wants to rebalance the offense. It’s not about limiting Mbappé’s impact, but rather reducing the over-reliance, making the attack more versatile and unpredictable — especially if Mbappé isn’t on the pitch.
