French striker Kylian Mbappé is now under scrutiny over a €180,300 donation made to five riot police officers (CRS) assigned to protect the French national team. According to Le Canard Enchaîné, the IGPN—the French police watchdog—launched an inquiry, now joined by the Paris public prosecutor’s office.

On Thursday, the prosecutor confirmed the opening of a judicial investigation for “undeclared work” and “money laundering from tax fraud,” following a Tracfin alert dating back to July 2024. The probe focuses on “atypical financial operations” involving five police officers and three private security agents. One police commander reportedly accompanied Mbappé during private trips to Cameroon and Provence.

Mbappé insists: “Everything was done properly”

Through a statement from his entourage, the Real Madrid star claimed the donation followed all legal procedures. “Everything was done by the book,” it reads, pointing out that Mbappé regularly donates his national team bonuses to charities and to the security personnel who assist the French squad. “There was no compensation involved,” the statement adds.

Despite the defense, disciplinary proceedings are expected this fall against the commander in question, who is reportedly being asked to reimburse funds deemed improperly received. While no charges have been brought against Mbappé, the situation adds pressure at a pivotal moment in his Real Madrid career.
