The standoff between Aymeric Laporte and Al Nassr shows no signs of ending. The Saudi club wants him out, but the Spanish defender isn’t giving in.
Al Nassr, in full overhaul with Cristiano Ronaldo pushing for fresh faces in attack and defense, hoped to sort out Laporte’s exit during their preseason camp in Portugal to avoid bringing him back to Riyadh. But with the season about to start, he remains on the roster — much to the frustration of the management, who are disappointed with how negotiations have unfolded.
New coach Jorge Jesus and the sporting directors have already decided to part ways with Laporte and Portuguese midfielder Otavio, but they have no intention of making the departures easy.
Laporte to be caged with 25 millions salary
To avoid FIFA sanctions for non-registration, the club is considering fielding them only in the AFC Champions League while freezing them out of all other competitions.
Laporte’s demands for a contract termination — seen by Al Nassr as a free pass to rejoin Athletic Bilbao — have angered the board. According to Marca, the club is now threatening to keep him “in a cage” for a year: earning his €25m salary but playing only sparingly, a situation that could jeopardize his chances of making Spain’s squad for the World Cup.
