Lionel Messi’s future with the Argentine national team remains in limbo as the 2026 World Cup approaches. Despite Argentina already securing their spot in the tournament, Messi, now 38 years old, is hesitant to commit.

Following a solid 3-0 victory against Venezuela, the captain of the Albiceleste expressed his doubts about participating in another World Cup, particularly at his age.

“In the past, I’ve said it’s unlikely I’d play in a World Cup at 39,” Messi noted, acknowledging the short time frame. He understands that while nine months may seem close, it can also feel like an eternity when contemplating the future.

As he played his last match for Argentina on home soil, fans are left wondering if this was truly the last time they would see him don the national jersey.

Messi Knows the End is Near

Messi is acutely aware that the end of his illustrious career is on the horizon. He openly shared, “I love the game, I love playing, and I never want it to end,” yet he also recognizes that retirement is inevitable. He stated, “The moment will come, I’m aware of that, and it will arrive when it needs to.”

On a physical level, Messi’s condition plays a vital role in his decision-making. “When I feel good, I enjoy it. If I’m not feeling well, it’s really tough, and I’d rather not play,” he explained.

With coach Lionel Scaloni potentially resting him in the upcoming match against Ecuador, it remains to be seen how Messi will manage his body as Argentina prepares for their journey to the United States.
