Virgil van Dijk has long dreamed of Real Madrid. The Liverpool captain even tried everything last season to join the White House. But despite his efforts, the door remained closed.
Van Dijk is not resentful, but his duels with Real have rarely turned in his favor: lost finals, eliminations… And yet, last season, he did everything to join the Madrid team. His agents made numerous approaches in Spain to create a direct link with the Merengue club, according to AS.
The defender even delayed his extension with Liverpool, hoping for a sign from Madrid. Offers piled up, including a huge proposal from Al-Hilal. He turned everything down, waiting for Real. But the Spanish club never opened the door, particularly put off by his serious knee injury in 2020.
The white dream did not come true
Van Dijk eventually extended his contract with Liverpool on April 17, realizing that his white dream would not come true. At 34, he chose stability over a leap into the unknown. Even when he joked in a press conference about interest from Real, the response remained the same: radio silence.
If Van Dijk was never able to take the plunge, another Red did: Trent Alexander-Arnold joined Madrid at the end of last season. And today, it is Ibrahima Konaté who is on the Madrid radar, as he has still not extended his contract. Among the Reds, the white dream never really fades away.
