Arne Slot came down hard after Liverpool’s latest stumble at Leeds (3–3). Under pressure following a series of catastrophic results, the Dutch manager did not hesitate to single out Ibrahima Konaté. A surprising, almost risky move, given that the coach himself is weakened by the sporting crisis and internal tensions.
“Unfortunately for him, he does a lot of good things, but he is a bit too many times at the crime scene,” Slot told the press. A direct reference to the penalty conceded by the French defender and, more broadly, to his involvement in several goals conceded.
“I heard this in England: it means he’s involved in the goals we concede,” the coach insisted, clearly putting the spotlight on his player.
Konaté offended — contract extension drifting away?
This public criticism comes at the worst possible moment. Liverpool want to extend Konaté’s contract, but the Frenchman doesn’t seem in a hurry to sign, especially with Real Madrid closely monitoring the situation. By exposing his defender like this, Slot risks worsening an already fragile relationship.
And in a dressing room where the atmosphere is electric, this latest media outburst could further complicate the future of the coach… as well as that of Konaté at Anfield.
