An explosive rumor is shaking Spain and FC Barcelona, launched by Spanish journalist François Gallardo, a former pundit on El Chiringuito: the club could be bought at a golden price by Saudi Arabia.
Should it be filed under rumor? Yes, for now. On X, Gallardo claims that Saudi Arabia is preparing a colossal €10 billion offer to acquire FC Barcelona, with the direct involvement of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. In the background lies the Catalan club’s critical financial situation, with debt said to exceed €2.5 billion.
A Club Ownership Model at Odds with a Takeover
The major problem is that Barça is not for sale. Historically owned by its socios, the club cannot be acquired without a profound legal transformation.
For such a scenario to become possible, FC Barcelona would have to abandon its member-owned status, convert into a sports joint-stock company, and then submit the sale for approval by its supporter-owners.
There are many obstacles. A considerable hurdle, which Gallardo nevertheless considers temporary. For now, the matter still belongs to the realm of rumor, but in Catalonia this mere hypothesis is already enough to spark the beginnings of a storm.
