For Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez, the reason behind the club’s disappointing season is clear: the Club World Cup. A competition that took place last summer.
Looking for someone to blame? Florentino Pérez believes he has found the answer. In an interview with El País, the Madrid president claimed that the tournament severely impacted his team. “The Club World Cup killed us this season. We had no preseason, and after three months we already had 28 injured players,” he lamented.
PSG Thrived Despite the Same Challenge
The Real Madrid boss is not calling for the tournament to be scrapped, but he does want a better-managed calendar. “I want to play in the World Cup, but not at the cost of sacrificing an entire season,” he added.
However, that argument is likely to spark debate. PSG also took part in the competition and did not appear to suffer from it. In fact, the Parisian club even knocked Real Madrid out in the semi-finals.
Despite dealing with several injuries throughout the campaign, PSG enjoyed a historic season, winning Ligue 1 and successfully defending their Champions League title. Enough to put Florentino Pérez’s explanation into perspective. While the football calendar is undeniably becoming more demanding, some clubs seem better equipped to cope with it than others.
