Lionel Messi’s promotional tour in India descended into chaos. Welcomed like a living legend by thousands of fans, the Argentine superstar only appeared for a few minutes at Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata before leaving. The frustration quickly spiraled out of control.
According to ANI, angry supporters ripped seats from the stands and threw them onto the pitch. The reason: an appearance deemed far too short from the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, heavily surrounded by security and barely visible to the crowd that had turned up in huge numbers.
Accompanied by Luis Suárez and Rodrigo De Paul, Messi simply waved to the fans while walking around the stadium, then left barely 20 minutes after arriving. For many supporters, it felt like a provocation. Some had paid up to 12,000 rupees (around €113) just to catch a glimpse of their idol.
Three days in India… already a fiasco
“We didn’t even see his face,” complained a furious fan. The result: anger, tension, and scenes of chaos in the stands.
The irony is striking. This visit is part of a three-day tour meant to celebrate Messi through festive, sporting, and charitable events across several Indian cities. In Kolkata, a massive 21-meter statue was even erected in his honor. But for this first stop, the celebration clearly turned into a disaster.
