Major setback for Real Madrid. Kylian Mbappé has been ruled out of the clash against SL Benfica. It comes as a cold shower for the Spanish giants.
Mbappé’s absence against Benfica has the whole of Real Madrid on edge. Struggling with a left knee issue since December, the French forward underwent medical tests on Tuesday after cutting short his training session. The Madrid staff made the call: enforced rest to avoid any aggravation and to preserve him for the end of the season, with major international fixtures also in sight.
Mbappé’s Absence Weakens Real Madrid’s Attack
The absence of the No. 10 is a serious blow for coach Álvaro Arbeloa, who had hoped to rely on his top scorer for this decisive encounter. Without Mbappé, Real Madrid’s attacking power drops significantly.
Los Blancos will now have to try to secure their ticket to the round of 16 without their main offensive weapon. The answer will come tonight at the Santiago Bernabéu. Mbappé alone accounts for 45% of his team’s goals this season, underlining just how crucial he is to Madrid’s attacking output.
This dependency did not begin in Spain. In the last five Champions League matches that Mbappé did not start, his team lost every time—three defeats with Paris Saint-Germain and two with Madrid. Real Madrid still hold a narrow advantage thanks to their 1-0 first-leg win in Lisbon against SL Benfica, but they must now confirm it at home without their star forward.
