It is now official: Walid Regragui has stepped down as head coach of the Morocco national football team. He announced the decision himself on Instagram.
A month and a half after the defeat in the Africa Cup of Nations final against the Senegal national football team (0–1 after extra time), Walid Regragui confirmed his departure in a video published on the social network.
A successor already lined up for the Atlas Lions
The announcement contradicts recent statements from the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, which had insisted that the former Morocco coach would continue leading the team.
After three and a half years on the bench of the Atlas Lions, Regragui nevertheless leaves the national side with a solid record, highlighted by the historic semi-final reached at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
To replace him, the federation is expected to turn to Mohamed Ouahbi, recently crowned U20 world champion with Morocco. João Sacramento is reportedly set to join him as assistant coach.
