Former Paris Saint-Germain player Lieke Martens has shared tragic news on Instagram: she has lost her second child.

Just weeks after publicly announcing her pregnancy, the Dutch international (159 caps) revealed the heartbreaking update. The former PSG player, who was expecting a second son with her husband Benjamin van Leer, wrote emotionally: “We recently shared the joyful news that we were expecting a second son. It is with deep sadness that we must inform you that the pregnancy did not go well and that we have lost our son.”

A painful loss and a need for time to heal

Deeply affected, the winner of the 2017 European Championship with the Netherlands spoke about the immense pain of this ordeal and her need to be with family: “This loss affects us deeply. As a family, we want to take the time and space to process this and give it room. Thank you for your understanding and support.”
