The decision has already sparked major debate. Despite finishing as the top scorer in the 2025-26 UEFA Champions League, Kylian Mbappé was left out of the Team of the Season unveiled by UEFA.
Being the competition’s leading scorer was not enough: Kylian Mbappé was surprisingly omitted from the Best XI. The French forward delivered outstanding performances throughout the tournament, scoring crucial goals and once again proving why he remains one of Europe’s most feared attackers. Yet the Real Madrid star failed to secure a place in the ideal lineup.
PSG Players Dominate UEFA’s Best XI
Real Madrid’s elimination before the final likely played a significant role in the selection process. In contrast, several PSG players, whose club won the competition for a second consecutive year, were rewarded for their performances. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia was even named Player of the Season after a remarkable European campaign.
The Team of the Season features David Raya, Marquinhos, Nuno Mendes, Vitinha, Declan Rice, Michael Olise, Ousmane Dembélé, and Harry Kane among others. The full lineup is: Raya – Llorente, Marquinhos, Gabriel, Nuno Mendes – Olise, Rice, Vitinha, Kvaratskhelia – Dembélé, Kane.
However, Mbappé’s absence remains the biggest talking point. Beyond collective achievements, his individual statistics speak for themselves. Finishing as the Champions League’s top scorer without earning a place in the Team of the Season is a rare occurrence, one that is certain to fuel further controversy. Many observers believe the France captain fully deserved a spot among the competition’s eleven best players.
