In an interview with El País, the Madrid president claimed that the tournament severely impacted his team. “The Club World Cup killed us this season. We had no preseason, and after three months we already had 28 injured players,” he lamented.

The Real Madrid boss is not calling for the tournament to be scrapped, but he does want a better-managed calendar. “I want to play in the World Cup, but not at the cost of sacrificing an entire season,” he added.

Despite dealing with several injuries throughout the campaign, PSG enjoyed a historic season, winning Ligue 1 and successfully defending their Champions League title. Enough to put Florentino Pérez’s explanation into perspective. While the football calendar is undeniably becoming more demanding, some clubs seem better equipped to cope with it than others.
