Monday night in Villeneuve-d’Ascq was a special occasion for Didier Deschamps. In what was his final match on French soil before stepping down after the 2026 World Cup, the France manager received numerous displays of affection from supporters during Les Bleus’ 3-1 victory over Northern Ireland. Despite the warm tribute, he insisted that this is not the time for emotion.
After fourteen years in charge of the French national team, Deschamps recognizes the significance of the moment but refuses to be overwhelmed by nostalgia with the World Cup fast approaching.
Deschamps Focused on the 2026 World Cup
“In a way, the circle is complete. There have been many messages and signs of affection, which are very pleasing. Since arriving at Clairefontaine, I’ve done many things for the last time,” Deschamps told TF1.
Focused on the main objective, the France boss prefers to look ahead rather than dwell on the past. “We still have matches to play. No nostalgia,” he added.
Appointed in 2012, Didier Deschamps will officially leave his role after the 2026 World Cup, bringing to an end one of the longest managerial tenures in the history of the French national team.
