He became the hero of an entire nation. At 40 years old, Vozinha produced the performance of his life on Monday night, frustrating Spain in Cape Verde’s historic 0-0 draw against La Roja at the 2026 World Cup.

With several crucial saves against Pedri, Ferran Torres and Lamine Yamal, the Cape Verde goalkeeper carried his team to what is widely considered the greatest achievement in the history of the national side. His outstanding display earned him the Man of the Match award.

At the final whistle, emotions finally overwhelmed the Desportivo Chaves goalkeeper. In tears on the pitch in Atlanta, Vozinha celebrated a remarkable result against one of the tournament favorites. “I cried after the game because I grew up with my grandparents when I was a kid, and they could not be there. They passed away a few years ago. My mum could not be here either because of a visa issue and the money we had to pay for it. We did not manage to do it in time,” he explained.
