He was the architect of Lens’ revival, but he will not be on the bench next season. After an outstanding year in charge of RC Lens, Pierre Sage has decided to leave the club and take on a new challenge in the Premier League.
Appointed last summer, the former Lyon manager departs after a dream campaign. Lens finished as runners-up in Ligue 1 behind PSG and, more importantly, lifted the first Coupe de France trophy in the club’s history.
Crystal Palace’s New French Manager
Sage has chosen to embrace a fresh opportunity. Crystal Palace officially announced his appointment on a three-year contract. The 47-year-old French coach will experience English football for the first time and benefit from significantly greater resources than those available to him at Lens.
As compensation, RC Lens will reportedly receive around €3 million, with a further €2 million possible through bonuses. A small consolation for Lens supporters, who had hoped to see their manager lead the club into the Champions League. “Crystal Palace Football Club is delighted to confirm the appointment of Pierre Sage as manager. Voted Ligue 1 Coach of the Year last season and winner of the Coupe de France, Sage has signed a three-year contract to lead the Eagles, subject to visa approval,” the club stated in its official announcement.
After only one season, the story between Pierre Sage and Lens has already come to an end. It is a departure that is likely to leave a bitter taste among supporters in the Artois region.
