World Cup: Mbappé Surpasses Giroud, Messi Now in Sights

Kylian Mbappé did more than help France defeat Senegal 3-1 in their opening match of the 2026 World Cup. Thanks to his brace, the captain of Les Bleus also broke two historic records in French football.

Two goals against Senegal were enough for Mbappé to move ahead of everyone else. With his strikes in New York, the Real Madrid forward increased his tally to 58 goals in 99 international appearances, becoming the all-time leading scorer for the French national team. He now surpasses Olivier Giroud, who ended his international career with 57 goals in 137 matches.

Mbappé Chasing World Cup History

The 2018 World Cup winner was not finished there. By scoring twice against Senegal, Mbappé also raised his World Cup total to 14 goals, setting a new record for a French player. He overtakes Just Fontaine, whose 13 goals at the 1958 World Cup had stood as the benchmark for decades.

At just 27 years old, Mbappé continues to build an extraordinary legacy in the blue jersey. Already France’s all-time leading scorer, he is now only two goals away from the all-time World Cup scoring record held by Miroslav Klose with 16 goals. He is also level with the pursuit of Lionel Messi, who produced a stunning performance against Algeria in a 3-0 victory and joined Klose among the tournament’s greatest scorers.

If the French captain maintains this pace throughout the 2026 World Cup, another historic record could soon fall.
