Lionel Messi’s night against Algeria (3-0) could have taken a very different turn. The Argentine star scored a historic hat-trick to equal Miroslav Klose’s all-time World Cup scoring record, but he also appeared to benefit from a major refereeing reprieve.

Messi escaped a red card before his memorable treble, in what many believe was a decision that could have altered the course of the match. Shortly after the half-hour mark, the Argentine captain stamped heavily on Aïssa Mandi’s calf. Despite the severity of the challenge, the referee awarded only a foul, while VAR chose not to intervene.

The controversy did not stop Messi from delivering a masterclass. Remaining on the pitch, the Albiceleste captain went on to score three goals and guide Argentina to an emphatic victory in their opening match of the 2026 World Cup.
