Senegal are struggling to come to terms with their elimination in the round of 32 at the World Cup. Beaten by Belgium after a wild match decided in extra time (3-2 AET), the Lions of Teranga are now facing a major first consequence: Pape Gueye has decided to step away from the national team.
Pape Gueye has had enough. The 27-year-old Villarreal midfielder announced his decision on Instagram: no more call-ups with this staff and this coach.
Pape Gueye Puts Pressure on Senegal’s Coaching Staff
Capped 45 times by Senegal, with 7 goals to his name, Pape Gueye no longer intends to wear the national shirt as long as the current technical staff remains in place. “I will come back to say a few words about the elimination… But today I am announcing that, as long as this technical staff remains, I will take a break from the national team,” wrote the former Marseille player, in a message that feels like a real bombshell.
His statement comes in an already tense context. The defeat against Belgium left plenty of regrets, and the future of coach Pape Thiaw is now expected to be the subject of many discussions in Senegal.
For the Lions of Teranga, the Pape Gueye issue opens up yet another crisis. After the sporting disappointment, the Senegalese Federation will now have to deal with internal unrest that could weigh heavily in the coming weeks.
