The scene sparked plenty of reaction, but it has not created any crisis within the France team. After Les Bleus’ 3-0 win over Sweden in the round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup, Rayan Cherki was filmed during a rather cold exchange with Didier Deschamps.
A few minutes after the final whistle, the coach approached the Manchester City player to say a few words to him. Cherki, visibly not very receptive, was tying his boots, avoiding Deschamps’ gaze and seemed more focused on his relatives in the stands.
No Tension Between Cherki and Deschamps
According to RMC Sport, the France staff do not see this sequence as a real issue. Internally, they insist that the relationship between Cherki and Deschamps remains good. The player was reportedly not annoyed with his coach, but rather frustrated by his own performance after coming on.
“He was frustrated with himself, not satisfied with his appearance. But not with the coach,” a source close to the France squad told RMC Sport. Cherki would like to have a bigger impact, and his recent outings have left him with a bitter feeling.
Didier Deschamps also admitted after the match that some players could be disappointed not to play, or not to play enough, while reminding everyone that “the collective strength comes above everything else.” The comment was presented as general, not aimed at Cherki. According to L’Équipe, the player is also dealing with a difficult personal context known to the staff, meaning everything is fine between Deschamps and Rayan Cherki.
