Rayan Cherki found his smile again at the best possible moment. After going through a difficult few days on a personal level, the France attacking midfielder enjoyed a positive evening during the World Cup round of 16 win over Paraguay.

Les Bleus were playing on July 4, American Independence Day. Coming on in the 84th minute, 22-year-old Rayan Cherki did not have much time to make an impact on the pitch. But at the final whistle, he still left his mark with a scene that was as funny as it was unexpected.

A Historical Nod to La Fayette

While celebrating France’s qualification, Rayan Cherki appeared wearing a hat associated with the Marquis de La Fayette. The nod was therefore particularly amusing in the context of this World Cup being held in the United States. After France-Paraguay, seeing a Les Bleus player celebrate with an accessory linked to La Fayette quickly made the French squad smile. Didier Deschamps himself also seemed amused by the scene. In a tense, tight and sometimes very nervous match, this light-hearted moment offered Les Bleus a welcome breather after their qualification for the quarter-finals.

For Cherki, the image also had a special meaning. After a difficult personal episode, seeing him smile again with his teammates inevitably touched the group. He may have played only a few minutes, but he still contributed in his own way to the post-match atmosphere. Les Bleus now continue their journey in this World Cup, but before turning their attention to the quarter-final, they were able to enjoy qualification with an already iconic image: Cherki as La Fayette, smiling among his teammates.
