FIFA’s decision continues to spark debate ahead of the World Cup round-of-16 clash between the United States and Belgium. Initially suspended, Folarin Balogun has now had his punishment lifted, making him available for this high-profile showdown against the Red Devils.
Rudi Garcia was left frustrated after FIFA decided to cancel Balogun’s red card. Asked about the U-turn, the Belgium head coach made no attempt to hide his confusion. For him, this decision raises questions that go far beyond Balogun’s case alone.
Garcia Questions FIFA’s Decision
“I didn’t know that in FIFA’s offices, July 5 was the same as April 1 in Europe. That was a discovery for me,” the French coach said, clearly surprised by the international body’s ruling.
Garcia then underlined the importance of the matter. According to him, Belgium is not only defending its own interests before this round-of-16 tie, but also some of football’s fundamental principles. “The Belgian federation is not only defending its team, it is also defending football, its integrity and its ethics,” he added. The coach even said he could not remember any comparable precedent in World Cup history.
Despite this strong statement, Garcia tried to calm things down from a sporting perspective. The controversy will not change Belgium’s preparation, with the team needing to focus above all on its match against the United States. But just hours before kick-off, the Balogun controversy has added even more tension around this fixture.
