Luis Enrique’s message after the draw against Rennes was not aimed only at Ousmane Dembélé and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. Above all, the coach wanted to warn his entire squad: this season, nobody will be able to rely on reputation or status.
Competition for places is much stronger at PSG. Luis Enrique therefore wants to rotate his team and involve as many players as possible from the very start of the season. Paris now have enough depth to occasionally leave some established stars out of the team.
Luis Enrique insists there is “no credit” at PSG
After Rennes, Luis Enrique was very clear: “There is no credit. You have to show every day, in every training session and every match, that you are ready.” The Spaniard added: “To keep winning, you have to get out of your comfort zone.”
The decision to take off Dembélé and Kvaratskhelia at half-time against Rennes perfectly illustrates this new approach. Ferran Torres and Mika Godts came on, with Torres scoring both of PSG’s goals. Even after winning two consecutive Champions League titles, Luis Enrique is starting again from scratch: past success will no longer guarantee anyone a place in the starting XI.
