Senny Mayulu’s absence against Rennes came as a surprise. Having recently extended his contract until 2031, the young PSG player was neither injured nor linked with a possible departure.
Was Mayulu’s omission a punishment? Yes… and no. It was simply a decision made by Luis Enrique. The coach reportedly felt that Mayulu had performed less well than his competitors in training ahead of the match. L’Équipe confirms that his absence was purely a sporting decision in a context of much stronger competition for places.
No Special Treatment at PSG
The message is a strong one, especially as Mayulu had featured in both finals played by PSG in August and has only recently signed a new contract with the club.
But Luis Enrique no longer wants to hand out places based on status. With a deeper squad at his disposal, he can now select the players who perform best during the week. Mayulu will therefore have to win back his place on the training ground, and he is unlikely to be the last important player to find himself temporarily left out of the squad this season.
