Lamine Yamal, the 17-year-old prodigy of FC Barcelona, no longer wants to be paid like a mere prospect. After an impressive season (54 matches, 18 goals), the winger is demanding a salary that reflects his talent and impact on the field.
Barcelona, which aims to extend his contract until 2026, is willing to discuss terms but is facing a significant financial challenge. The Catalan club, already restricted by a tight salary cap, may struggle to meet the expectations of their young star.
According to Cadena Ser, Yamal demands to be part of the high salary bracket, which could potentially mean a reduction in salaries for prominent players like Lewandowski, ter Stegen, or de Jong. If these stars refuse to lower their wages, Barcelona could find itself in a difficult position.
Director’s Clarification
On Wednesday, it was reported that Yamal was asking for the highest salary in the squad to renew his contract. However, Deco, the club’s sporting director, clarified the situation during an appearance on RAC1.
“The renewal of Lamine’s contract is on the right track, and he deserves a fair contract. It is not important for him to be the highest-paid, and he has not asked for that, that’s not true. He just wants to be happy here, and he has told us, as well as his agents. If we renew him, it will be the best signing of these last years. What matters is that he is happy, and we are talking about a contract for four, five, or six years,” Deco said.
The message is clear: Barcelona wants Yamal to be happy, and the goal is to secure a long-term deal with him. However, the financial discussions could take a delicate turn if the rumors are true, though it seems they may not be.
