Trained at Olympique Lyonnais, Karim Benzema remains one of the greatest symbols of the Lyon academy. Between 2004 and 2009, the striker established himself as a key figure for OL, stacking French league titles and showcasing extraordinary talent to the wider public.
This breakthrough in Lyon then allowed him to join Real Madrid, where he built an exceptional career and became a global reference in his position. Now 38 years old and currently playing for Al Hilal, Benzema regularly sees his name linked to a potential return to his formative club. An idea that excites Lyon supporters, nostalgic for his dazzling years in the Rhône jersey.
Replaying with Lyon, Benzema’s clear response
However, during an Instagram live session with rapper Rohff, the former French international made things clear with a short but definitive response:
“I can’t.” This statement reflects a certain weariness toward a question that keeps coming back and firmly puts an end to speculation about a return to OL. “Why not work there afterward…” That said, Benzema is not turning his back on Lyon. While he rules out a comeback as a player, he leaves the door slightly open for a future collaboration with his beloved club: “Why not work there afterward, but not as a player.”
This opens up the possibility of a return in another role once his career is over. The story between Benzema and Olympique Lyonnais therefore seems set to continue, but no longer on the pitch. A strong bond forged from his early days that could take on a different form in the years to come.
